The John Rylands Research Institute and Library on Deansgate is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Built between 1890 and 1899 by Enriqueta Rylands as a memorial to her husband, the Neo-Gothic building features soaring stone arches, intricate stained glass windows, and a reading room that rivals any cathedral. The collection includes the St John Fragment β the oldest known piece of the New Testament (c.125 AD) β along with Gutenberg Bibles, medieval manuscripts, and early printed books. Now part of the University of Manchester, entry is completely free and the building hosts regular exhibitions and events.
